Random Photos

Here's some random site photos: hiking, hanging out with Jon, watching as my community continues to kill endangered species.  There's also some photos of an animal reserve and gardens in Boquete.

Latrines in Paradise

I just got back from a composting latrine project in Escudo de Veraguas.  Yes, admittedly, it is a stunning way to spend a few days.  That being said, we also got some good ol´ EH (environmental health) work done.

I was lucky enough to get an invite last month from some of our tourism volunteers, Mike and Amanda Smith, who needed some help with the composting latrine construction.  They are helping Rogelio, a warm and generous Panamanian, start up some tourism on the parcel of land he owns on Escudo de Veraguas.  The idea is to eventually have a few cabañas and latrines for tourists visiting the island.  Tourists could spend their time taking in the turquoise waters, going on fishing expeditions, and using the newly-constructed "facilities", courtesy of myself and the rest of the volunteers.

Last week, we loaded the boat full of concrete blocks, cement, and our tools and headed out on the 5+ hour trip out to the island.  We spent a few days building in the grueling sun and were rewarded with beautiful sunrises, a morning tour of the island the last day, and fresh fish everyday.  Pictures speak volumes.  Enjoy!

Author´s Note:  The photos are a little biased towards a certain someone.  Cough, cough.  Everyone else put in as much sweat and muscle into construction as I did.  Go team!
